ORD Earthworks volumes

Hi,

I am looking for a method to calculate more complex cut/fill volumes with Openroads Designer update 2. This could be easily done with EAV methods, now it seems more cumbersome as EAV tools are not included in the software package anymore. I am aware that EAV is not 100% accurate method and this prismoidal approach may be eventually beneficial, however it needs a few enhancements.

With ORD it is quite easy to create  meshes of cut and fill for simple earth work scenario when you just need to calculate  volumes between bottom of proposed road and a top of existing terrain but this is not a real life scenario at all.

In real projects we need to include at least topsoil stripping or existing pavement demolition. Adding demolition or stripping components to corridor definition is not an option for complex project where more than a few template drops are defined (there is a youtube video showing how to create topsoil stripping component posted to CivilTSG channel) - my workaround is to edit existing terrain model - actually as they will do during the construction phase - I just remove topsoil, existing pavement, etc. Time consuming but doable and in fact gives understanding of construction process. That's for typical projects.

For more complex scenarios we need to include top soils stripping, demolitions, ground replacemnet (MDC removal and replacing). Unsuitable ground should be replaced with fill when needed, etc. That was easily achievable with Inroads 8.7 - V8i SS4 when using EAV methods. How to deal with this now? What is the suggested Bentley's best practice that would work for industry standards?

thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Adam

  • JeremieDL,

Hej, Are you able to list all componets areas on your XS, ef unsuitable material, subgrade, etc? and then have these in reports? I could only annotate Cut/Fill and same with reporting. In my EAV table I would need also ground replacement, topsoil streeping etc. Same with annotations on XS. I have all in my 3d model and displayed proerly on the XS, however in text favourites I can only annotate Cut and Fill.

    Did I miss sth here?

  • You can report on prety much everything you asked but you can only annotate (with text favorite) the cut and fill vallues of your Xs.

By using the Volumes.xsl you can report on thoses values (End Area Volumes)

Depending on what feature definition you choose for your unsuitable you can have it include (or not) in your cut and fill.

It's just that at the time of your original post this was not possible.  So I may be wrong but Jacob Sejr was asking if you could report on your Xs.  Is true in Inroads we could annotate our Xs with the EAV values, In ORD we can only have the report for area.
