ORD - Still having Issues creating Field Books

I'm still experiencing some issues when creating Field Books in the "Survey" working environment.  I've created two videos showing my attempt from the starting point of creating a new workset and drawing all the way through creating my named boundaries, sheet sets and then, unsuccessfully my field book.  Towards the end of the second video you'll see that I attempted to create a field book in the 3D view and it appears to create it but it never shows up in Explorer.  It does appear though when I click on Delete Field Book.  Please take a look at the two videos and offer any insights you may have on what I'm doing wrong.  Thanks for your help.

I tried dragging and attaching the two videos here in the editor but apparently the file sizes are two large.  I'll go ahead and post this message and then try to upload the files separately using the directions included in the Secure File Upload Wiki.

  • I tried creating a new design file using a 3D seed file as Mark and Gary suggested and was partially successful in doing what we need to do.  Upon creating my new design file I immediately created a field book successfully.  That's a good thing.  Unfortunately I'm hitting another roadblock after that.  After creating the field book, I attach some reference files (geometry, terrain and a corridor).  I then attempt to create named boundaries to ultimately create a sheet set.  At this point though I'm not able to create named boundaries.  Attached is a link to the video documenting my attempt.

Perhaps it would be helpful to give you an overall description of what we are trying to do.  We want to reference in 3D bridge design files and create a sheet for each bridge bent.  We then want to place survey points (point features) in various locations on each bent to represent coordinates and elevations and then place labels on each survey point to convey the information needed.  We're creating the field book in order to  be able to place the survey points.  I don't know if knowing a little of the back story will help or not.  Here's a screen shot of a sheet that was created in SS4 that we are now trying to create in ORD.

  • Thanks Mark, Gary and Cliff for tag teaming this issue.  I think I have it resolved now.  Not totally to my liking...lol...but resolved.

From what I can tell and correct me if I'm wrong, you perform all your civil design including creating your named boundaries and sheet sets starting with a 2D seed file that for the sake of this thread I'll call File X.  But, when you want to do any survey work in ORD you have to get out of File X and create a new "survey" file using a 3D seed file.  We'll call this File Y.  In File Y you can create a field book, reference in any files necessary and then in my case, create your survey points and labels as required.  Once you have completed your survey design work you exit File Y, reopen File X and then reference File Y into File X so that you can see the survey points and labels in your sheet sets.

If this workflow isn't accurate please let me know but from what I've been able to gather this is how the survey and civil pieces of ORD mesh.  I really wish that the two were more integrated and that after you created your Default-3D view in File X you could perform any survey related functions in it.  As it seems to stand though your going to be jumping back and forth between two files as you develop your design.

I'm going to mark this thread as "Answered" but feel free to respond if you have any further input.

    Thanks again,

    Chris
