measuring between 2D & 3D elements

Is there a way to measure between elements on the same plane when your in a 2D file and have an element in a 3D referenced file?

  • Depending on the version of MicroStation you are using there are ways. Older V8 version will measure the 3D slop distance if you snap to 3D points from a reference file even if you are in a 2D file. I look at this in terms thinking that all files are 3D the 2D drawing is essentially in a 2D mode that is what allows it to reference in 3D elements.

There are some utilities that can be loaded to measure Horizontal distances only. "measure3d.mvba" is available for download somewhere it has Horizontal and Slope distances in its measurement so you can see and choose the one you want.

Later version of V8 -- XM and V8i have options on the "Measure Distance" dialogs to select a "Mode" - True - View - AccuDraw/ACS. A true 2D horizontal distance would be using the View Mode where it will measure using the active depth setting for the Z value resulting in a constant Z and Horizontal distance. This should probable be posted on the MicroStation Forum...
