I have created a car park terrain using "Create from Elements" and want to cut it down to just the pavement area by adding an external boundary at edge of pavement. I have created a 2D boundary (Complex by Elements), but when I try to add it to the terrain as a boundary I get a "No valid Elements Selected" error. The message itself doesn't indicate why the element is not valid. Any help appreciated.
Being unfamiliar with Microstation, I have also tried creating a closed polyline in Autocad and bringing it into the DGN with Merge to Master. Attempting to add it as a boundary fails with the same result.
This is the error that I am seeing in Message Center.
BTW: I am using MX SS4 (02.11.09.879)
The command you are using is looking for a 3d element hence the error. There are a couple of ways to achieve what you are trying to do. If you have a 2d shape I would create a clipped terrain as that command will clip to a 2d element. You will find that command under terrain, Q7 the icon that has the scissors in it.
Another method if you have created the feature by complex elements that are made up of 3d elements it's only 2D until you complex the profile and make that active after that then you could use your workflow above.

Thank Ross, I'll give that a go.
Would another option be to drape the 2D complex and make it 3D?
It would be nice if the message told me that it was expecting a 3D element rather than a generic error. I had viewed some Bentley videos and had not picked up on the subtleties of 2D/3D models in the new Open Roads tools.
Yes that could work sounds like 177 code to me Andrew, but the option of complexing the vertical is something you want to get a hang of as it comes in very handy when creating civil cells. Yes the tools are greatly different than the old mx code!
I regularly encounter this error message even after confirming the elements I'm attempting to add as boundaries are 3D. Is there anything else that could trigger it? Any help is much appreciated
