Power Civil v8i: Create LandXML from Land Desktop

I have been trying to use the new tool in Power Civil v8i to create a LandXML file from a Land Desktop project (UILauncher.exe).

Once the LandXML file is created, how do I import the data into Power Civil? The XML file may contain several surface models, alignments, profiles, points, etc. The Data import routine in Power Civil doesn't seem to recognize the multiple surfaces or give the option to select a surface for import. Also when I try to import COGO points from the same XML file Power Civil crashes. I know that in Power Civil XM, points, alignments and surface data had to be in seperate XML files. Is it possible that v8i is the same and thus it can't handle the multiple data types in the Land Desktop XML file?

There are some known issues in the landXML import into Geopak/PowerCivil, some of which you have mentioned.  Work is underway to address these issues.  Of course, that does not help you today.  I would suggest a call to our support line and send the XML files in question to see what is the best solution.  Or post a sample XML here and someone can probably help.

Perhaps the highest hurdle to cross is the question of multiple surfaces in a single XML which is a current limitation in Geopak/PowerCivil.

The LandXML question is one of particular interest to me as it has been one of my areas of investigation in recent weeks.  If you can post (or email me) a sample file then I will take a look myself.  Keep in mid though that the support line will be more responsive than I can be.  But, if you can work with me I will be happy to help.

  • Here is a file I created from a small project that is just started.  It only has the existing ground dtm and the cogo points. I wasn't able to get the points into a GPK and I had problems getting the surface into modeler. My main reason for posting wasn't to get help with this particular project but more to see if the new tool would save some steps in getting the data into new projects. Apparently it is not fully functional. Until it is working properly I can get the data I need the old way so there is no urgency on my part. I'll let you decide if you want to play with the data. Now that I know the issue is not in my workflow I'll move on.

Thanks for looking in to it.

  • Thanks Neil.  This sample will be useful for us.   I think your workflow is probably OK.
