I am getting survey chains that are zig-zagging connecting when I input my data sets. is there a setting I have wrong or ?

are you using openroads survey or classic geopak survey?
the only thing I can think of is that your codes are not correct. does this happen on other machines? could it be a bad preference?

It depends on your data but usually point number n e z lcode pcode
when you go to your survey preferences, linking codes, are they blank?
you should try deleting your .spp file and your resource files and try with a new project.
