Civil3d LandXML surface to Microstation Surface - Help

Posting this here in hopes of finding a CAD/Microstation crossover expert.   The situation:  We have a 5+ mile topographic surface in Civil3d2018 that we need to get into Microstation.  LandXML seemed like the way to get this done but have come to find out that MicroStation doesn’t hold the triangles created as part of the Civil3d LandXML export.  Basically it hold the points but then all of the triangle faces need to be flipped to match the Civil3d surface.  We were hoping one of the long time experts in both could provide us with some guidance.  This should be so easy yet it is so hard....or possible it's our ignorance but we have tried and searched high and low and have not found a solution.

  • Hi,

Is there any reason you can't just reference in the surface dwg into a new 3d dgn and merge to master?

We have found that the problem with Civil3D LandXML lies in the fact that c3d does not export breakline data in its XMLs so we always have triangle face issues going into other software from c3d.

  • Actually this is incorrect. We export LandXML files for use in Trimble Business Center and the breaklines show up just fine. When importing a Civil3d Landxml surface that was created using breaklines the breaklines show up in the LandXml import.

I am not sure what you mean "merge to master"?

  • Actually have a look inside an LandXML file out of c3d and youll understand what I mean. Breaklines are defined by an array of points instead of unique breaklines that define triangle edges, therefore they are "rebuilt" differently by different software packages. We regularly exchange data with c3d and we have analysed the issues with c3d surface XMLs for a while.

Merge to Master is the process of inserting your reference into the current dgn.

  • i just exported a random surface LandXML file from my current drawing and imported it into Trimble Business Center and all breaklines were both included and held in the import. In fact, all triangles were also held, exactly like it should react.  Obviously MS handles things differently but the breaklines are most definitely included in the LandXml surface export from Civil3d.

  • Interesting, this I not the case with MX, Openroads, 12d model, and other civil design packages.

I'm not saying breaklines are not reproduced, I'm saying they are built from a group of breakline points instead of defined breaklines in the XML. Triangles are "flipped" only when there is not enough data to reproduce the same conditions.

  • There is no doubt both software packages produce high quality survey deliverables. I'm a surveyor and have worked in both platforms. Your experience is anecdotal try not to let it color your judgment when working through complex problems. The forums are a great resource and many folks do try and be helpful. Please post back to us your results.

    Take care.
