I gave up on this for a while to focus on more pressing things, but I found this LEARN course helpful. However, it still uses a batch process to update all sheets prior to printing. It also goes through how to use the Sheet Index prior to printing, which looks like it could be promising if it sees some improvement.

https://learn.bentley.com/app/Public/ViewLearningPathWithMasterCourseExpanded?lpId=109141&mcId=103403

Honestly, I still use a few Text Substitution strings because they simply work.

RE: Automatic texts in the drawing head

Hey Josh.

I have returned to this issue after some time but still haven't found a solution. The video showing updated sheet index numbers is interesting, but it doesn't solve my need.

Have you found a solution, and if so, could you please redirect me to forum post or video?

RE: Automatic texts in the drawing head

I have since discovered that the filename doesn't get updated unless and until a file/model is opened. This is problematic when using Print Organizer after creating sheet models using named boundaries. For instance, I have a cross-section file full of several sheets. If I add them to a print organizer set and print them from PO, the sheets still display the filename from the Sheet Seed.dgnlib unless I open each sheet model prior to printing with Print Organizer.

Having to open every sheet just to update the fields is not a good workflow.

RE: Automatic texts in the drawing head

Thanks Mark.

I used "Inset Field" to add filename and print date to my sheets. I added these fields to a dgn file called Plan and Profile Border.dgn. This file is referenced to my Sheet Seed Definition file. However, this field does not update when the actual plan sheets are created. The filename populates with Plan and Profile Border.dgn, not the actual plan sheet file name. The time doesn't update either.

I created a cell, and added some text and 'Insert Field' to add some file properties - to give WorkSet/WorkSpace/Filename as a test. I placed this on my sheet, and the fields update when file is open (or key-in 'Field Update Select' to select the fields to update). I would assume you could add the fields to your border so that they are always there.

RE: Automatic texts in the drawing head

You may be able to use an annotation cell - see 'Creating Annotation Cells' in Step 5 in the following. https://learn.bentley.com/app/Public/ViewLearningPathDetails?lpId=111346
