Power Civil: Road Intersection Tool

How do we handle road intersections when a road loops back into the main road and thus connects in 2 places? The road intersection tool does not seem to accomodate this. Would we need to assign different curb symbology to each intersection or is there another approach?

See the screen capture.

  • Hi Neil,

this is a known limitation of the roadway tools.

I've found that the ebst solution given this situation is to design the second intersection manually using the Edit Profile tool. That will be teh quickest alternative and saves p-laying around with symbologies.

  • Actually I would rather use symbology vs. manually grading on a large network. That way I wouldn't have to recheck everything when making updates. The problem I've had is getting the tool to recognize the curb symbologies. I've not been able to make it work in several cases regardless of the search radius applied. Do you have any troubleshooting techniques for when the tool doesn't work?

  • Not really.

The tool is scanning for elements totally contained within the scan radius (from the interesection of the 2 alignments) that meet a symbology settings. Thats about it.

  • Not sure if this is a "troubleshooting tool" but one we like to use is on the Element>New/Edit dialog, the last tab is Display and can be set to highlight elements that are in the active object, model, etc.  So if elements are somehow not included as you expect, this tool will highlight all the elements except the ones that didn't make it in the object.  After that you can maybe rerun the curb return tool, or just use drape element or composite section or edit profile.
  • Hi Dan,

Thanks for the guidance on the Display elements tab. I am quite familiar with that tool. In this case I can view the TIN and readily see where the curb returns are not being added to the road objects. The problem I am having is the intersection tool is not recognizing the curb return elements at all and thus is not applying any grades or sections to them. I've tried adjusting the search radius and experimenting with different element symbology settings but nothing works. I've gotten the tool to work on other occasions so I don't think it is a workflow issue (although I've been wrong in that regard many times). I am in the process of duplicating the project here in the office so I can do another run through to see if I get different results.
