OpenRoads Designer: How can I put 3D objects (placed as cells) on the right X Y Z location?

I am trying to put gauntries (portalen in Dutch) in the OpenRoads model. I have put .obj, .fbx and .ifc files in the model to try them out.

Some problems I come across:

1. How can I put the gauntries (or other objects, like traffic signs) in the right location? If I open front, right, top view and move something in those views, the other positions also change. I can't change the X Y or Z in the menu. How can it be this hard to put a 3D object on a road??

2. I exported some Revit family files into an IFC file and imported them in OpenRoads Designer. There is some text show and in some models also level information. How can I delete this? Or do you know any way to export a Revit family file (It's a Revit project with the Revit family file in it) without the text and levels?

3. I have imported some traffic signs in .dxf format. They are not shown properly. I also had some trouble to rotate these 90 degrees so they stand upright. The dxf files are designed in 2D for a 2D drawing, so they are perpendicular with the road. To rotate them 90 degrees around an axis shouldn't be this hard right?

Tips or a tutorial for importing and placing 3D objects would be great, I am missing this subject in all the course material and on the forum.

Below are some images to explain the problems. I hope it explains some stuff.

  • Hi Lara, I understand what you mean, I was in that process last year. I will try my best to answer some of your questions.

Revit Family, best way is to import the .RFA it transform them as dynamic cell.

For IFC try using version 2.xx the format is better when exported from Revit.

For traffic light or other stuff, make them as cell and put the insertion point on the bottom of post.  When you are in a 3D view, insert it when on the top view, the cell always get inserted according to the view your are in. You can then snap it to where you want and then rotate it.

For working in 3D environnement better ask in the Microstation forum, they have all the answer there.

You can also make point feature definition that insert your 3D block so this way it become associated to openroads rule.  You then have dynamic elevation, placement and auto adjustment to your corridor.

    Hope this help

  • Hi! Thank you for your answer. It did not solve my problem, so other answers are more than welcome!

    My reply on your answer:

Importing .rfa files is not possible right? I think you mean first exporting the .rfa file to .ifc and then importing them into OpenRoads Designer?

I am trying to snap some cell to certain objects, but when I rotate the model in 3D (after snapping a traffic sign for example on a point) the imported model still floats in the air instead of being snapped onto the object.

About point feature definitions, I don't really know how this works for 3D blocks (what kind of file type? also for objects that don't repeat themselves?). The objects I place are unique and don't repeat themselves. So what is the benefit of that? That they are snapped on the corridor?

For the other on this forum: Are there any other designer who work with .obj, .ifc, .fbx, .dxf, .dwg files in OpenRoads Designer and how do you place them on the right place?
