A Power InRoads/Project Defualts Catch 22 Situation

We use ProjectWise at our agency and when an user tries to open a file, he cannot, because it says the Project Preferences (Project Defaults) are not set, but we cannot set them without being able to open Power InRoads.

It's a Catch 22.

We can't open Power InRoads because the Project Defaults are not set and we cannot set the Project Defaults because we cannot open Power InRoads.  Any ideas?

  • Darren,

Does Power InRoads open OK outside of ProjectWise?

  • Is it really Project Defaults or that it can't locate a default preference (XIN) file?

Project Defaults are stored in the registry and can be modified to get around issues.

Also, links to files in ProjectWise in Project Defaults can be tricky. This is compounded even more if you use variables.

For example, our xin file is recalled using $(MDOT_INROADS_XIN_DIR)\$(MDOT_INROADS_XIN_FILENAME)

If you look at their values in the configuration variable dialog box, they resolve to

    pw://SHAVMPWX.shacadd.ad.mdot.mdstate:SHAEDMS02/Documents/Standards and Publications/SHA CAD Standards/Development/Workspace/Standards/SHA_V8_02/inroads/

    and

    sha_survey_civil.xin

Notice the PW path includes a trailing / so when appended together, there is a double \\ between the folder and file name. We found, that if you eliminate the slash in the Project Defaults definition, the XIN file fails to load. So the extra slash is not only not a problem, but it is actually required.

One more thing, be aware that except for alg files, which require a special variable manager setting to function in PW, many other InRoads files may be copied out from ProjectWise, but to the user while in InRoads, appear to be open for read/write. But since they are not checked out, they cannot be checked back in once the session is over.

  • Thank you Tom and Caddcop for your replies.

The problem has been solved.  It turns out I was looking in the wrong place.  I was under the assumption the user was a current user on a new machine, but it turned out he was a New User and needed his profile set up.  As soon as I set him up a profile, Power InRoads opened up.  It did have the Project Defaults set.  This probably happened when we set them by launching Power InRoads outside of ProjectWise.  (We had been under the mistaken belief that even though they were set outside of ProjectWise, they were not setting for Power InRoads when we tried to open a .dgn from ProjectWise.)

    Thank you again,

    Darren
