Openroads Designer 2019 Release 2 - Civil Cell Problems

When ORD 2019 Release 1 came out we had issues getting the Civil Cells that were delivered with the software to work properly.  To avoid the pitfalls associated with those Civil Cells we created our own.  After a lot of study and trial and error I developed several stable cells that worked very well with our work flows.

We recently upgraded to Version 10.07.01.32 with the hopes that some of the bugs noted in previous versions had been addressed.  Now the Civil Cells that I previously developed no longer work properly.  It seems to have something to do with projecting profiles from one element to another.  In previous versions of ORD if two geometry lines were at 90 degrees to one another you could project a profile at say 1.5% from one to the other and it would work.  Now it seems like there is about a 50/50 chance that it will work.  I also have a situation in one of the cells that I created where the angle between the lines is about 60 degrees and I can't get a profile to project.  The lines even share a common end point.

I wanted to make sure what I was observing only happened in the latest release and not in the previous one so I went to a computer that had not yet been upgraded to the latest version.  I tested the cell by dragging the control lines around trying to "break" the cell.  I couldn't do it.  Now if I open the cell in the most current version and drag the control lines around the cell graphics immediately fail.

Has anyone else noticed that civil cells are not working properly in the latest version?  Has anyone had problems specifically with projecting profiles from one element to another?

  • Can you share your dataset? I will try to reproduce the issue.

You can upload your files here: https://bentley.sharefile.com/r-r896c545ed414e47a

Can you also describe the workflow leading to the error?

  • Marc,

I’ve uploaded the custom Civil Cell (Urban DW No SW Taper Only.dgn) to the link provided.  My workflow is pretty straight forward.

    ORD Version 10.07.00.56
    1. Open Civil Cell
    2. Grab edit handle of driveway centerline
    3. Drag and click new location
    4. Check for problems with graphics update in 3D view (none noted)

    ORD Version 10.07.01.32
    1. Open Civil Cell
    2. Grab edit handle of driveway centerline
    3. Drag and click new location
    4. Check for problems with graphics update in 3D view.  Site_Lawn geometry lines do not update correctly and graphics don’t update.  This appears to have something to do with the profile projected from the edge of pavement to the Site_Lawn geometry line.  I experimented with the geometry I created and it looks like when the driveway centerline control line is adjusted the profile on the Site_Lawn geometry line changes to a dashed red line and the cell fails.

  • Thank you for the file.

I've been trying to see a difference when moving the line 'DW_CL' but it seems to react in the same way in both 2019R & R2.

Can you send me some screenshots of what I should see? Ideally with the dgn file for both case. The link above is still available for uploads.

    Sorry about that.

  • Marc,

I have uploaded files for both the computer with ORD 2019 R1 and the computer with ORD 2019 R2.  There are three files for each set.

    Files 01 – 03 are for 2019 R1 and include:
    1. DGN file used to create Civil Cell
    2. Screen shot with three views: View 1 - Geometry without modification, View 2 – 3D view of curb, driveway pavement and grass shoulders, View 4 – Profile of Geometry element Stln10.
    3. Screen shot with same three views as above after adjusting DW_CL showing graphics still intact in 3D view.

    Files 04 – 06 are for 2019 R2 and include:
    1. DGN file used to create Civil Cell
    2. Screen shot with three views: View 1 - Geometry without modification, View 2 – 3D view of curb, driveway pavement and grass shoulders, View 4 – Profile of Geometry element Stln10.
    3. Screen shot with same three views as above after adjusting DW_CL showing graphics for grass shoulders incorrectly represented.  Also, View 4 shows the profile of Geometry element Stln10 in red and dashed as if it is undefined.

It appears as if the rules established for the profile along element Stln10 are lost when the DW_CL is adjusted.

The computer on which the ORD 2019 R2 version was installed was upgraded from R1.  Is it possible that this has something to do with upgrading and not doing a fresh install?

  • Hi Christopher, thank you for the detailed workflow.

Unfortunately I was unable to reproduce the issue. It works fine with 2019R2 on my end.

Have you tried with no workset?

We can try to identify the cause of this problem
