the only frustrating thing is that ORD is the only Bentley package that exports Item Types out to IFC as well (someone please correct me if im wrong).

Yep OpenBuildings has export IFC. Its pretty good.

Rant Warning.

Typical of software in AEC, infrastructure ones don't have same level of functionality as Building ones. Everything is geared to buildings and pretty much ignores infrastructure.

If you looking for a software that handles lots of different format and maintains all attributes when federating, including ItemTypes and ORD data. Try Revizto.

Navisworks 2021 and 2022 has an improved IFC reader, thats not based on Revit, this accepts IFCs from ORD.

Hoping ORD 2021 improves export of data to IFC, as SUDA and Terrain data doesn't convert at the moment.

Hey Mark, no, I don’t believe it does. I could understand why you would want to use item types, though. They bring really take 3D models to true BIM models with their attributes. Please update the post if you find something that does support items types.

The big thing for us is does it support Item Types. I believe not unfortunately.

I know I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but Navisworks 2021 now has a .DGN importer “built in” as a Beta Option. If you look under General Settings in Navisworks 2021 and select the DGN Beta check box, this will allow you to simply import Openroads and Microstation files into Navisworks. I have tested this was ORD corridors and it works well.

I'm not sure AutoCAD supports 3D line types. You can try setting this switch to see if they get dropped during export:

Hi Benzi, may I know how do you preserve the lanes markings (created via 3D linetypes) while exporting the model to DWG format?I've tried exporting the 3D model to DWG, but the lane marking dash lines ended up with straight continuous lines instead of dash lines.

Adam, God no!

At the moment, until IFC as a system gets better and the exporters catch up we aren't really using IFC

Do you edit every single IFC and replace all"/" signs? Or just in FD paths? Find/Replace tool? I am a bit lost with this.

Another option is to export the 3D model to DWG and then use Civil 3D to export to IFC. Works well and maintains display colors.

Yep. Replacing it in the path generally allows the IFC to be opened in other software

Issue is to do with the "/" in the feature defintions. IFC readers dont like it. If you open the IFC in Text editor and replace / for _ they work

We have started converting all our IFCs to 2x3 for Navisworks in the Ad Hoc ITwin Design Review (https://review.itwin.bentley.com).

Not a very efficient workflow, but seems to work.

Hi,

are you aware of any changes here? I can't open IFC created with ORD 2020 R3 with Navisworks. It works nearly fine with freeware BIMVison, all Item Types Data is in place. Just missing colors that are defined in the DGN. However the requirement for the project is to use IFC with NavisWorks.

I could append DGN to navis, looks good but Item Types Data is missing, then I used plugin IFC Exporter to export dgn to IFC. Not really efficient, no Item Types, graphic is rough.

Going mad with this, closes to switching software to one that can produce IFC for this project.

Any workflows, how you deal with ORD and IFC highly appreciated :)

Hi Christiaan,

I had a similar query recently. Unfortunately were stuck with only the latest schemas so other software needs to support it as well, which will be very unlikely.

Hopefully there's support for the widely compatible 2x3 schema, even if it isn't the latest or "Civil".
