OpenSite Designer for DOT work

As DOTs move to OpenRoads (ORD) and require consultants to deliver in that version of the software will consultants who have OpenSite Designer(OSD) be able to utilize the ORD Workspace and submit their deliverable using OSD as long as their project doesn't involve corridor modeling?

I have put that question to the folks at Bentley as well. It took a while for someone to come forth with an answer, but the answer at present is "No". I was informed that the Workspace structure and functionality for OpenRoads and OpenSite CE versions are not yet completely compatible with each other (but they are working on it). If you are planning to use both ORD and OSD, for now you will need to develop two separate Workspaces, one for each. Unfortunately, there isn't much learning material on Connection Advisor or Webinars devoted for OpenSite Workspace Development compared to OpenRoads. If you plan on using ProjectWise, you will need to set up separate ORD and OSD projects in it as well.

  • Are not all of the tools of Open Site Designer planned to be incorporated in Open Roads Designer? If so, how might that affect our workspaces?

  • I don't know the answer to that question at this time, but I surely hope so. I was lead to believe they are working on it. I am approaching all our ORD, OSD, OBM, and other module Workspace development as a continuing work in progress. You kind of have to since all of their new CE version software appear to still be in development somewhat by them as well. So I am anticipating some more than minor changes to our ORD and OSD based Workspaces will be necessary in the future as they complete the development and/or upgrade their existing versions if they are truly planning to incorporate the functionalities of them both for complete compatibility.

  • This is the first i am hearing about needing difference Workspace for ORD and OSD. Is there more guidance on this anywhere? My company is getting ready to transition to Connect from SS2 as the DOT(PennDOT) is making the change. I am creating our company workspace and adding PennDOTs workspace.

Is the Microstation workspace compatible with ORD or OSD? what about PowerDraft? We will have all 4 platforms being used on many projects...

    Thanks

  • I believe the basic structure of ORD and OSD workspaces is the same. In my (limited) experience with OSD configuration I think the issue is that it (OSD) is considered a "lower" product than ORD so there are some limitations on the manner in which civil elements/configurations can be manipulated. There is a similar difference between ORD and OpenRail, which has started to cause us a little difficulty with some of our configurations as well. All of this is in addition to tracking the civil schema used by the various versions of the different products (which fortunately has been the same for the last couple releases).

As for MicroStation, it should not reference the civil content in the workspace, so as long as it and the civil product are configured to point to the same "platform" resources, they should be compatible. I can't speak to PowerDraft.
