Can you select the drop down next to Tasks to select "Civil Tools" - this should show everything under Terrain Model for you. If not, you could go to Tools > Tool Boxes > switch to Tasks > scroll down to check on "Civil Tools" and press ok/open as tool box - that will get you to all the tools in a different format.

I see you have a customized workspace (The TDOT menu item isn't part of vanilla Geopak).
I betcha that's interfering with the task menus.
Unfortunately, I don't know the fix, but you might search on here for "custom interface".

Hello Tamara. I got busy and couldn't get back to the forums. Your on the right track. The task of creating a TIN from a LiDAR product such as a LAS file can be complex and involve multiple steps to extract the necessary break lines, voids, boundaries etc. At this point you may need to consult a surveyor or be prepared for the longer learning curve of the extraction process.

I do know of a good survey firm.

Not bailing on you. However going forward does require a set of skills that would be very difficult to acquire via forums. Do some Google-fu on a software called TopoDOT. The software has simplified and improved many 3d Microstation workflows.

I had kept trying to use that first option in the DTM utilities called "convert TIN" and it didn't get me anywhere.

I have several POD or LAS files that I have edited the preferences the way I want. Now I want to create a TIN from the points. Am I getting close? Thanks!

What you showed earlier looks like the plain MicroStation Terrain tool.
Make sure that Geopak is activated. I don't think the civil tools will show up if it isn't.

If your Task dialog isn't already open, you can open it by going to Workspace -> Preferences -> Task Navigation and click on "Show Main Task Tools".

When that opens, you *should* see a list of task tabs. Look for "Civil Tools". These are the SS4/OpenRoads-type tools that go along with the regular Geopak tools in SS4/SS10. That should show you another list of task tabs, including things like "Analysis & Reporting", "Horizontal Geometry" and (what we really want to see) "Terrain Model". Click that tab, and you will see a couple of dozen terrain-type icons.

The first tool is "Create From File" and one of the file type options is going to be LAS files.

I do have Geopak, I just don't have the Power pack. I just have everything I have listed above. But I use Geopak every day to generate cross sections and profiles, I just never have needed to create a surface TIN until now. There has to be instructions to create surfaces using the set-up that I have somewhere. If I have to have more software installed, I can request it, but I think my company decided not to do the Microstation Power Pack or Open Roads.

Yes, I have Geopak app for Microstation:

Then I can pull out all my Geopak tools from there. I use a bunch of different workspaces for different clients, but I think there is only one version of Microstation installed on my computer. Some of the workspaces use InRoads and some use Geopak. I do not have Open Roads.

What I see is that you are using Microstation, and not GEOPAK, which is the software that you are being shown that you should use.

classic Geopak. I do not have OpenRoads. All the instructions I am finding are for OpenRoads.

Maybe your not using the same version of SS4 as I am. Here is what my tools look like options etc.

Are you using Classic GeoPaK or SS4 with OpenRoads?

I don't know about a Wiki article, but this is the process I follow:

Import .LAS file using the Pointcloud reference dialog
Use the Create Terrain from Pointcloud tool
Select the terrain and export to Geopak TIN

I hope this helps. I would recommend processing pointclouds in OpenRoads Designer because it handles pointclouds and terrain generation a LOT faster than any SELECTseries product because of the 64-bit architecture (SS is only 32-bit).
