Bottom Mesh for Linear Templates and corridors

When modeling corridors and linear templates, the bottom mesh creates a vertical line at the end of templates.  In contrast the top mesh doesn't do this.

Is there a fix to this?

(Bottom Mesh highlighted in Red below)

I am trying to include bottom meshes for quick subgrade terrain creation.

  • A work around would be to add a 0 depth component to the bottom of the template, which you could use instead of the automated bottom mesh. I have done this work around and works well.

    But if there is a better way, I would like to know.

    I have created the subgrade component in templates as well. 

    I was wondering if the default bottom mesh creation could be used on linear templates and corridors similar to the Top Mesh creation.

  • Basically the bottom mesh feature is useless if you use linear templates.  Great.

    I really don't understand why the software was designed without consideration for subgrade surfaces (terrains).  This is one thing construction contractors need!  I am always fighting with this issue.  Even if the bottom mesh feature worked, It still creates vertical faces and terrains don't accept vertical faces. Usually producing a wacky subgrade terrain. You would think if the terrain found a vertical face it could offset the top feature 0.0001 or something in order to produce an accurate terrain. 

    That's my two cents.

    We have issue with how other software, like noise software, reads Vertical faces, so we purposefully build in small horizontal shifts to avoid this. 

    So the issue, isn't just with ORD.

    I may opinion it is all about knowing the limitations of the software your using and what others need, and then figuring out workarounds.

  • Yeah,  I am to a point where I avoid vertical faces in templates as well. Adding extra points so terrains can be created without issue.  Most people miss the fact that terrains or surfaces still rule.  Contractors what 3d breaklines and surfaces.  (Finish Grade and Subgrade).  Except for visualization, they don't really care about components and meshes right now.

  • We are moving to Components now, and away from simple extruded 3d solids.

  • Components are great for visualization and estimating quantities but, as you say, they have very little value in construction.

    Is there a reason the top front of the gutter pan or edges of pavement are included in the bottom mesh?  I have to confess to some ignorance regarding the behavior of linear templates but with standard templates I've never included those points in the subgrade surface.

    Otherwise, to avoid vertical segments you'll need to offset one of the points by a small amount (I usually use 0.001).
