Backward Compatibility of OpenRoads?

I work with people from another company on this project. They use a more updated version of OpenRoads. They worked on a file and saved it. Now whenever I tried to open it, OpenRoads would only let me open it read-only.

Is there a way to scrub the part of the file that came from the more advanced version of OpenRoads.

  • This could be a huge problem for us. Our projects often have a life cycle of a couple of years (or more), and we partner with other firms as prime or as sub. If OpenRoads versions are not backwards compatible, that really complicates project management between offices.

It even complicates things within one office. In a perfect world, everyone is updated with the most current software identically, but that's not what happens at some places in real life. The new guy just hired gets a computer with a fresh install, the production workers are updated on a semi-regular basis, and the engineer who uses the drafting software every couple of months for five minutes...?? It also may cause issue with testing updates to make sure they CAN be passed along to everyone.

It also leaves me hesitant to dig too deeply into development, if the standards I develop are going to become obsolete with the next software update.

  • I have to point out that not only ORD is not compatible backwards but it also is not fully compatible forward. Altough the files created in U7 can be opened to writing in U8 but in fact they are terribly incompatible and throw errors and exceptions all the time. I would say they are useless.
New update seems very promising but only on projects started with it.
