I am able to append elements to the end of a current alignment, but cannot add (append) elements to the beginning. I have simplified geometry, but it still says Invalid geometry type. I want to see the existing profile for 1000' prior to where we were starting before. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you just want to display the terrain before your profile you may use the Create 3Dcut: https://communities.bentley.com/products/road___site_design/w/road_and_site_design__wiki/41757/video-create-3d-cut-in-profile
Does that mean we cannot append to the beginning of an alignment?

Yes you can also append at the beginning.
