How to move elements placed in 2D to the terrain model

I am modeling 3D elements which were previously placed based in their corresponding X Y coordinates at elevation 0. Now that we have the terrain model I need to raise all of these elements to their corresponding elevation defined by the new terrain. Is there any way to expedite this process instead of visually drag and drop? I have a huge amount of elements and going one by one does not seem very productive.
