How to get back to "No feature definition" in Drainage and Utilities?

Hi everyone

The function "place lateral" requires a tap node to start with, and I have by mistake set the feature definition of the tap node to some manhole. Now I want to go back to "No feature definition" value because I just want to use the  normal junction for it, but I don't know how to get back to No feature definition value. If I click on the drop down menu, it forces me to select one of the feature definitions available.

Is it something that I have to do under configuration? I'm an OpenRoads rookie, so please guide me step by step if possible

  • Hi Eva,

I was a little confused by your question, as the tap node is created by ORD when you place the lateral.  That's what makes the Place Lateral tool a bit different than Place Conduit - you don't need a downstream node because you are connecting directly to an existing conduit.  I was able to reproduce the situation you described by changing the Feature Definition of the tap node after it was created, but was able to simply use Undo to restore the tap node to the original Tee that ORD created when the tap was created.  If you've gone too far with your design, then using Undo may not be practical for you.  You may have to just delete the lateral and the tap node and redo.

Note that the node Feature Definition you have to supply when creating the lateral is only used if you are creating a new upstream node for the lateral.  It is not used for the tap, which initially is created with No Feature Definition.  If you connect the lateral's upstream end to an existing node, then the node FD you supplied is ignored.  I hope this helps.

  • Hi Karl

It's exactly as you described as I couldn't undo the selection. My colleague told me that I shouldn't choose any "feature definition" for tap node (in which their computers shows "no feature definition". I "chose" the feature definition by mistake and now I couldn't get back to choose "no feature definition" - I have to chose something.

It's not about a certain tap node, it's about the whole setting.

I can't just delete a certain tap node and redo the whole thing, because my setting is "fixed" into choosing a feature definition. I attached a screenshot here, where the circle I made on the screen (is now set to some sort of fictive point that we made) but on my colleagues' computers says "no feature definition" . I can't select "no feature definition" because the selection is simply not there. I hope that explains.

  • What version are you using?  I am using 2020 R1 and my Place Lateral dialog does not include input for Tap Node Feature Definition.  However, I now understand your issue.  I have not run into this before, because I've always needed to supply a Feature Definition.  I tried deleting some user preference files, but could not get back the "no feature definition" dialog state.  If no one on this forum has a solution for you, I suggest submitting a Service Request.  Please return back here and post a message when you find out the solution. Thanks.

  • I am using ORD 2020 Release 3 version  10.09. 00.91. D&U workflow continues on Open Flows # 10.03.01.08; . I am seeing the user can now input a Tap Node FD. I tried to use one of the Inlets/JBs but it didn't accept. I had to create a Tap Node FD, use the Tap Node Structure in the definition, link it to the tap node prototype, for the dialogue to function properly. It lets to define the upstream node of the lateral and the lateral pipe size. The tap node's invert is defined by a distance measured from center of trunk line (atleast that's what I tested for). I haven't run the hydraulics to verify the flows are considered correctly in the trunk line. Here is a image from R3. Hope this helps!

  • If you want to reset the Place Lateral tool dialog, then you can do this. In Windows Explorer, go to this location:

    C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\OpenRoadsDesigner\10.0.0\prefs\civil_commands

And delete the file called SUBSURFACE PLACELATERAL.xml

This file contains the settings of the Place Lateral dialog. Deleting it will restore the dialog to its defaults.
