Simple Horizontal Alignment by PI - Why not?

Bentley,

I think you should task one of your employees to design a real project with OpenRoads Designer.  Which means modeling a roadway project then after corridors are created start modifying the alignments.  This includes extending alignments , removing curves and adding vertical curves.  I would bet all the corridors you created with those edited alignments will blow up, lose connection and crash.  This is my experience.  I am currently trying to figure out how do I dumb down my modeling. I would rather redo work then sit here and watch a blue circle spin around for a half an hour after every change.

Creating geometry in OpenRoads is such a nightmare at times.  Why can't there just be a "Create Simple Alignment by PI" for horizontal geometry like the vertical geometry "Create Simple Profile by PI".  I just need to add PI's , insert PI's , delete PI's and change curve radius or length.  That is it  99.999999% of the time.  I don't need 50 rules controlling my alignment.  For example, try adding a PI or curve to the beginning of a complex element.  Basically, plan on starting over with your alignment, profile and corridors.

Sorry for the complaints, but these issues need to be fixed.  Designers are wasting a lot of time and money on stupid issues like creating an alignment.  At least give us a option to create a simple dumb alignment and the tools to edit it easily.

  • There are plenty of things that you can't do in Civil 3D as easily as in ORD.

In C3D we have to use Data Shortcuts, which actually makes copies of my alignments, surfaces, etc. into every drawing I use. In ORD, I simply attach my alignment or my terrain drawing as a reference and I can use it anywhere. That's far superior, in my estimation.

  • Hi Paul,

Although it is much easier to manipulate geometry in Civil 3D, I wouldn't agree it is superior - i'm curious what you mean.

Other products like MX and 12d actually have better geometry creation tools than Civil 3d so I wouldn't given them credit for anything special in this regard. The biggest thing we are missing is a simple ELEMENT-based Table Editor that allows you to redefine the "fixity" of geometric elements, eg. free, floating, fixed.

I'm thinking the biggest reason we're having these issues is that a geometric element is created as being from, to or between adjacent geometry and we need to complex redefine a replacement to change that instead a tabular option to change its connection to adjacent geometry.

I know we have Geometry Connector, etc but this is not really suited to the "normal" user trying to make a simple change and also is very hard to understand for new users.

  • Autodesk

    C3D Dreference sucks.

    ACAD Xreference sucks.

    And C3D sucks.

Only Horizontal alignment tool in C3D is god like.

  • Hi Mark

Nice to see your post beyond 1AM.

Never used MX in any project before just know that is another superior product, just like never drive a Ferrari.

I was just talking about the alignment tool only. Let me give a rank of the horizontal alignment tools for the other products just for fun.

    Gold: C3D

Silver: Some unknown ACAD add ins

    Bronze: Inroads / 12D

    Not in the game: ORD

  • haha true, however you can't review a Ferrari and rate it as the best if you have never driven one before.
