Assign Item Types via Element Templates

Hi

I am trying to attach Item Types to ORD template components (meshes) via Element Templates. The reason for doing this via Element Templates and not via Item Type as Feature Definition property is that I have single Item Type, eg. "Pavement" and one of its property is "Material". When I add Item Type to Element Template I can set up every single property. So when I have wearing course Element Template, in my Item Type "Pavement" the "Material" Property would be set to "Wearing Course". When adding Item via FD i Can just select "Pavement" with no way to specify Item Type Properites, "Material" here.

When FD has no Item Type property defined, 3D meshes have no Item Types attached even if it should be there as it is set up in Element Templates.

We are aware of Asset Manager, lookup tables to populate Properites but we would like to have as much data populated with no extra effort.

I wonder how woul you deal with this.

Thanks in advance.

Adam

  • Adam, Doing the same at the moment.

Only way i can see to do it is have one Item Type with all properties you need attached to the FDs

Have raise this with Marc Blancher this morning.

At least with Feature Definitions you can specify them in Excel them import through xml, can't do that for Element Templates

  • Chris,

When attaching Item Type to the Element Template you can pre-populate some properties there. E.g. i have a single Item Type for my project "Pavement Layer" with Properties: a)Material, a)thickness this is standardized, no other Item Types are allowed so I can not have different Item Type per every single FD.

Now I have two layers, wearing course made of 4cm SMA, and binding layer 6 cm of AC.

For both FD wearing course and binding course I have the same Item Type "Pavement" layer attached. No way to differ its Material and Thickness properties. This could be done by prepopulating properites in Element Templates but unfortunately these are no attached to mesh compeonts wit all other cad properities.

I hope I am clear enough.

number of ways to populate properites in post-processing - Export/Import Instances, Lookup Tables, etc.

But would love to keep process as simple as possible.

  • HI Adam,

maybe this enhancement request explains your issue: Enhancement 1061952:Element Template: Item Types need to populate from dgnlibs

"Element Templates will not see Item Types if they are in a separate DGNLIB file.
Under the manage Element Templates, on an Element Template, Right Click > ADD > then select ITEM.
Nothing comes up.  If you create a new item type in the dgn file or dgnlib containing the Element Template, it will list that new Item Type as available.  We need the ability to assign item types from dgnlibs."

It's planned for the next release, so if no major issue it should be ready this semester.

Thanks but this doesn't help me.

I have Item Types, Element Template and Feature Definitions all in the same dgnlib and the Element Templates dont get applied to the objects when created using ORD tools.

  • I would agree with Chris. ET are not aplied along with ORD tools. Item Set attached to ET is not propagated to cad meshes produced by the ORD.

We can have a Teams session so I can better explain what is the crux of the problem.
