Assign Item Types via Element Templates

Hi

I am trying to attach Item Types to ORD template components (meshes) via Element Templates. The reason for doing this via Element Templates and not via Item Type as Feature Definition property is that I have single Item Type, eg. "Pavement" and one of its property is "Material". When I add Item Type to Element Template I can set up every single property. So when I have wearing course Element Template, in my Item Type "Pavement" the "Material" Property would be set to "Wearing Course". When adding Item via FD i Can just select "Pavement" with no way to specify Item Type Properites, "Material" here.

When FD has no Item Type property defined, 3D meshes have no Item Types attached even if it should be there as it is set up in Element Templates.

We are aware of Asset Manager, lookup tables to populate Properites but we would like to have as much data populated with no extra effort.

I wonder how woul you deal with this.

Thanks in advance.

  • I filed a defect regarding this issue but it has been closed with the reason that it’s working as design.

The explanation is this one: “The ability to attach multiple Item Types including default values directly on Feature Definitions provides the requested functionality without using Element Templates.

Also, Item Types are business data that need to be attached directly on Feature Definitions. We do not support item types on Element Templates because those would attached to a Feature Symbology. Feature Symbology and Element Templates are presentation data, not business data. Furthermore there are multiple Element Templates on each Feature Symbology which would make the attachments and conflict resolution more confusing than necessary.”

  • With Feature Definition you can not customize Item Types Values. So when you have Item Type "Aggregate" with value "sieve/seed" you can not have these vallue different for different FD. Wit ET there was no such issue. When you Use Set Feature Definition tool you can customize Item Type Values but not when FD is assigned with ORD modelling tools. Pitty.

  • Hi Adam,

Would Item Type Picklists, Look up tables or even Expressions help with that - maybe some potential there?
