Survey conversion from SS10 to Openroads Designer

I'm trying to convert a pickup survey done in ss10 to Openroads Designer. I was able to export and import it using a land xml file, but when I import it into ORD the feature definitions do not display properly. It's almost like it is holding out to the feature definitions from the older workspace. I've tried to edit the feature definition in the project explorer window but the feature definition portion is greyed out. Is there a way to assign the correct the feature definitions?

  • To edit Feature Definitions within one of the libraries, you must be in the DGNLIB that contains them. Or you must edit them directly in the file you are in.

We were fortunate that our Workspace in SS10 is the same one used to migrate to ORD, so most features were ready to go. This was not a trivial task, as there is no automatic conversion of linked to native (XIN, in our case) Feature Definitions to the symbologies and element templates. It took a lot of tweaking of files using the Migration Utilities. This was still more efficient than editing feature definitions, symbologies and element templates one by one, dialog box by dialog box. If you have not looked into them, they can be a real life saver.

We also found we could use the FWD file (InRoads Survey) as a conversion file format, but we also have a number of XML reports that can write out various ASCII files from InRoads Survey in a format that ORD could consume.

  • Fairly late answer... but i just ran across this.

Not sure what SS10 software you are using.... with MX we create regular SS10 OpenRoads features from the survey by importing them.  Then select them all and create a terrain model from them.  this terrain model is then exported LandXML.

Edit the exported XML file before importing it into ORD...... in SS10 the feature definitions did not have a path.... in ORD you need the path for it to find the feature.....

Edit the Exported LandXML File to modify Paths.  Open the data transfer file 12345-TerrainFeatures.xml just generated for Linear Features in a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++. Do not use Word or PFE. Use the Search/Replace… tool to add Feature paths to the Feature names. Find style" value=" Replace All occurrences with style" value="Linear\Topo\Strings\    (Note that there is a single Space between the first Double Quote and the word value for both character sequences). Save and Exit.    Then import it into ORD to create the features.

Note the the path to your features in ORD may be different than mine...
