[ORD/PW] Setting Up Workspaces in PW Questions

We are trying to get our ORD Workspace configured for ProjectWise. The Wiki videos are very helpful but there is no place to ask questions, so I am making them here.

We have a fairly standard folder structure for major projects that h\\s evolved over the years. There is a topmost Projects folder and below it, a folder named for each county. Finally, under that folder, we create our project folders. We actually implemented work areas a while ago, which we use to provide "relative" paths to certain shared support files for InRoads. We did discover that attempting to convert existing project folders into work areas can fail, or at least generates some type of error message if the project folder contains too many files and subfolders.

  • Is it possible to store the CFG file for a workset in a subfolder of the Project folder? We already supply a _ProjectWide/CAD Resources folder in every project. Relocating the workset CFG to this location would be consistent with its purpose and less likely to invite accidental modification or deletion.
  • Similarly, can the project DGNWS file also be stored in this manner?

We have other smaller projects that are not as segregated. If we need to have two files added to every folder that contains projects, some of those folders are going to become very cluttered.

  • OK, I have one more related issue.

I am trying to get the Workspace to be active when I open files in the configuration - seed files, dgnlib's, etc. The Dynamic Workset CSB sees the work area and assigns the _USTN_WORKSETNAME correctly. I made a CFG file of the same name in the folder pointed to by _USTN_WORKSETSROOT and made sure there was a location for the DGNWS file with the appropriate variables.

I think I know what is going on. My definition of  _USTN_WORKSETSROOT to a top level Worksets folder under our main configuration folder is being superseded by another assignment, making it a Worksets folder under our Workspace folder. While this is not a deal breaker, I'd really like it at the former location, but I don't know how to get in front of the later assignment since I cant really determine where it occurs. In the temporary CFG, it occurs after my assignment but where do these even come from?

My only other option is to try and replicate my PW workspace outside of PW and use an MSDEBUG on that setup.

  • Have you tried locking the variable you want to keep? We lock almost all the CSB variables to make sure they dont get overriden at a later point.

  • Apparently, it was being redefined in the PW copy of WorkSpaceSetup.cfg

So even though you can't tell its loading the standard CFG files, it is. But, you were also right - I had forgotten to lock that earlier assignment in my CSB!

While this has at times been exasperating, it has also been enlightening!

Thanks again. I believe we can finally put this thread to bed!
