Help with Template... please

Good Afternoon,

I'm using InRoads SS2 version 8.11.07.630

I’m trying to create a template that follows a horizontal alignment, which places a single component at the point where the Horz. Alignment meets the Existing Ground and two points 12’ either side of the Horz. Alignment where they meet the Existing Ground.

But I cannot get the component to behave as a straight line it just drapes over the Existing Ground over the 24'.

I don't want the resulting cross sections to show these lines 'draped' over the existing surface, I want to see a straight line from the CL to the intersection at 12' offset.

This is so I can get a rough idea of what the existing slope is via a report.Thank You for your time and your assistance, W

  • I think you do not want this to be a stripping component. I believe you actually want a linear component between your points. Recreate it as a constrained line (non-closed) element. I think that would eliminate the draping.

    I had REALLY Hoped that changing the component type was going to work but for me it hasn't... darn it.

  • Mary is definitely on the right track. However, the reason your report isn't generating properly is due to the fact that your points are using a Project to Surface constraint. What you can do instead is roughly something like this (in order):

    1. Place a horizontal component going out 12' ("float" this up in the air)
    2. Place a vertical component going down from the end of that horizontal component. This should be an end condition that targets your existing terrain. (Project to Surface might work, I haven't tested that)
    3. Place a diagonal component (this will be the one you report for slope) that connects the CL at existing grade to the bottom of the vertical component you placed in step 2.

    While I'm not sure exactly what the purpose of this exercise is, based on what you are saying I am pretty confident you are making it more complicated than it needs to be.  Mary is right, you should not be using the Overlay/Stripping component (unless of course you are doing that type of project).

    As for the template, part of your problem is that when 2 or more points along a component are set to "Project to Surface" the component between those points will automatically trace the surface. Of course, a second issue is that you used the Overlay Component, which is causing more issues on top of that.

    I suggest you just use a constrained component and lay out 3 points (ETW-L, CL, and ETW-R). Make sure the component is not set to "Closed Shape" (Right-click while laying out the component and un-toggle that option). Next set each of the ETW to be horizontally constrained to the CL at 12' and vertically constrained to Project To Surface. The CL point will be unconstrained (green, like on a typical template).

    From here we're going to control the vertical location of the CL by creating a vertical alignment that does it for you.  Go to File> Import> Geometry and then go to the Vertical From Surface tab. The key setting here is the Points of Vertical Intersection Interval, it must be set to the value at which you wish to model your corridor and cut sections. The rest of the dialog is pretty self explanatory. When you create/run your corridor, make sure you use that vertical alignment.

    That's it! That's all you have to do!

    I DO APPRECIATE everyone else chiming in and giving a hand on this, MaryB and eddiegiese.

    I was trying to bypass creating a Vertical Alignment since what I wanted for elevation of all components was the existing ground elevation... but that was a bad idea.  Also I didn't realize that having a single line component with the points on either end "projecting to surface" would cause the component to "drape" over the target surface... good to know.
