Migration Utilities for 10.10

When will Migration Utilities be upgraded for 10.10 release. Specifically with the ability to define Item Types associated with Feature Definition.

  • I spent about 20 years away from the DOT where I had to do what you describe - keep multiple client workspaces up to date. But I will tell you this - Creating, updating and maintaining a workspace is a lot more work that making sure a client supplied workspace is up to date.

But my original comment that we need a guide or series of videos on this tool still stands. Where can we find something to help us implement this now tool?

  • Chuck,

I rely on the DOT's doing a thorough job of 'building' a Configuration. In maintaining the various Configurations, I have them at both ends of the spectrum - those needing little extra effort on my part to make it work "WELL" and those taking a lot of effort. Obviously, I spend most of my time on the ones needing "help". For me my top priority is keeping designer busy designing and not troubleshooting the Configuration.

I have not found any guidance (Help, BE Communities Learn Server, etc) to help us, administrators, effectively use these Migration Utilities. It is a little frustrating.

  • One reason I decided to return to the DOT as CAD Manager, was that their Workspace had stagnated in the V8 cycle. As an InRoads shop, very little enhancements in the workspace were made for a very long time. Their XIN was nearly unchanged since it had been created from the earlier INI files. And a lot of those items had not been updated since they were created from the older PRF version.

Even when the Roadway Designer was introduced, very few improvements had been made and some settings were actually less than optimal from a production standpoint. There appeared to be little user feedback to improve things.

One area that was neglected was DTM Features. No Survey Features were enables as DTM Features. No one ever showed the end users how to assign logical feature styles when building a DTM from Graphics either.

So when working for the DOT at my previous firms, I found it necessary to tweak their XIN significantly and also to implement an extensive naming convention. My fear, as time wore on, was that eventually, the DOT would address these deficiencies but might do so in a very different manner that I had implemented.

Well, that never happened and now that I am in charge, I am implementing many of those ideas and more. But what I lack are resources. It seems there is money for the engineering, but not so much for the behind the scenes efforts required to support those efforts.

We did get a new contract with Bentley recently and it includes moneys for support efforts, but in many instances, we need to make decisions and certain organizational efforts before we can have Bentley take the reigns.

BTW, in the What's New in 2022 R1 Video, they demonstrate the use of the Civil Feature Remapper. But Even with this tool, it would take a fair amount of work. You need a list of Feature Definitions in the file you wish to remap and a list of Feature Definitions in your workspace to map them to. The tool can generate both lists, but it will need to create two spreadsheets and you will use one to assist in adding Feature Definitions to convert from and the other automatically pulls the target Feature Definitions from its own worksheet tabs.

I think you may still need the Migration Utilities to evaluate things and to possibly convert a foreign set of Feature Definitions into ones that meet your needs.
