I am trying to find the best workflow for creating construction staging cross sections. The project was modeled using multiple corridors across mutliple design files.
Corridor clipping needs to be applied when working within the DGN containing the corridor.

If I go into my original corridors and clip them to create staging cross sections, what does that do to my original final condition cross sections? And what happens if I need to update them but I have a clipping reference active in the corridor? Seems counter productive. If I can reference in corridors, terrains and recreate profiles and cross sections, it would seem that Bentley can make corridor clipping work on corridors while referenced.
It is standard operation for reference files to be read only when referenced. Cross sections will be representative of the 3D model they were generated from. If the 3D model is modified then the sections will update (some annotation may need to be redone). If a static set of sections is required that do not update then you can either make a copy of the design files for that stage of the project and generate sections from that or you can export the sections to DGN to create 'dumb' graphics that are no longer linked to the 3D model.

I am working with a traffic control design team and they are also hoping to be able to clip a referenced proposed roadway cooridor.dgn file so that the modeled MPT phase can be seen next to the adjacent constructed roadway in 3D and dynamic section views. Are you saying that the only why to clip a corridor file is within the design file itself? I though there would be an easier way to clip a referenced corridor in both 2D and 3D?
Yes, corridor clipping can only be applied in the DGN where the corridor exists. Reference attachments can be clipped using the clipping options in the reference attachment dialog box (but that is not the same as corridor clipping as its only clipping what is visible from the reference).
As Paul said, you can use refence clipping which I have found to be much easier than corridor clipping for creating staged cross sections. You can simply create a new drawing, reference the 3d corridor model, and clip mask or clip boundary within the 3d model. This will be reflected in the cross sections created within this drawing.
