Manually set Rainfall Intensity for Inlet Computations in OpenRoads Designer

Hello - I'm a new ORD user trying to get familiar with the VDOT - Civil workspace. In Virginia, for certain roadway classifications, the VDM requires the use of an intensity of 4 in/hr for inlet computations (Spread Width). Previously, in Geopak, I was able to select a box within the preferences of the drainage design file that allowed the user to set a maximum intensity value for inlet computations. Is there a similar feature in ORD that I am missing? Alternatively, is there a work around to have the inlet computations use a different intensity than the capacity computations? Seems like the work around I'm finding is creating user defined Storm data that outputs a 4 in/hr intensity and checking the "Use Local Rainfall" box in the catchment tab before running the scenario so the intensity computes correctly. I haven't tried this yet as that seems too long winded to be the solution here but if that's the case then I'll move forward with that.

Thanks

  • Hello Andrew,

Have you tried using Scenarios and Alternatives?  Sounds like you need two different rainfall rainfall Alternatives, and two different Scenarios (one for Inlet Analysis and one for Pipe Analysis) which use the different rainfall alternatives.  This is fairly common practice.  NCDOT does the same thing.

  • Thanks for the reply Karl. I understand the use of Scenarios and Alternatives. My current work around is creating user defined IDF Curve Data that outputs an Intensity of 4in/hr and then in the Catchment tab of the Rainfall Runoff Alternative, checking "Use Local Rainfall?" and selecting my user created Local Storm Event. My question is, is there a better way to do this? Do I need to recreate this local rainfall data for each job or should I request 4 in/hr IDF Curves from VDOT since the other IDF Curves being used are standard directly from VDOT's Drainage Manual? In Geopak, I was able to click a single box for all inlet computations so this seems like far too many steps and I feel like there is a better way but I can't seem to find it.
