Between two offices we have OpenRoads Designer (at mine) and OpenSite (at the other). So far I'm the only one using the software. The other office wants to check my work. I was able to cobble an SS2 version, but I guess the time has come to ask: If i make a file in OpenRoads, can someone with OpenSite open and/or view it?
I had zero exposure to what OpenRoads Designer was, and less of OpenSite. Does OpenSite have a similar configuration setup as OpenRoads? If so, can I drop in PennDOT's WorkSpace in the same way as OpenRoads? I'm guessing if so, then it should be no problem to easily open an ORD file (he said with a touch of trepidation).
Hi Mark,
You can reference in models from other Civil platforms and use all reporting and analysis tools for review. Eg. an OpenRail or OpenBridge user can reference in an OpenRoads or OpenSite DGN (and all combinations in between) and do everything except edit the source data.
On the design side of things you can also build dependancies and relationships between the models so although you can't edit the source data between the Civil packages there is still some interoperability between then all.
I don't see a need to edit the source DGN at all in my opinion.

Mark

Mark,
I think it was another possible option for making an ORD file reviewable to someone without ORD/OSD. I wasn't thinking of editing the dgn, unless one were saving it back to an early dgn, say, 2010, 2007 (which is doable).
But you can only have one version of those earlier ORDs on your computer. So it's "good" if you have to send data to someone else (although how good can it be if you can't check the conversion?). But not something you want to do unless in dire circumstance.

Good point. We do this regularly with PS SS2 as the other office uses Carlson, I think, to open PS SS2 files, and needs them in 2010 format. I think your advice regarding the use of Civil File Manager to "save back" is: don't do it!
I'm still looking at the other options up above the fold using export.
Thanks, MsB!
what about saving the data out to PDF - if they are only doing "checking" of your work ?
