Recently, we were brut forcing the modeling intersections in our project until we learned about Civil Cells. We have found them easy to edit and place, but we found that in some cases, the terrain moves and it causes some weird distortions

RE: Civil Cell - Terrain Moving

(This is the Civil Cell, with the point controls, but before I change the radii from 35' to 75')

RE: Civil Cell - Terrain Moving

Hello Robert,

I added a point control for the shoulder of the template and it freaked out even more. I see that is mostly the terrain of the return that is acting strange. Could you tell me where I could edit the triangle properties? I also have no idea what point I should drag like the one you mentioned to correct the issue. For more context, this all started when I increased the radii from 35' to 75'

Thank you again for your tips and tricks! I've already ran around a bit so I'm a little tired.

RE: Civil Cell - Terrain Moving

It's not moving. It is getting confused about boundary elements. Notice triangles on the outside of upper radius where there should be none and the absence of triangles in the right hand lane. This is a pretty common occurrence. Partly it is nature of the beast, while we pray for future improvements.

Here are some things that typically work for me:

Many (most?) times what happens is the join line across the edge of the mainline corridor ends up overlapping the radius. This join line will sit right on top of the EOP. Select it and drag the start and/or end stations towards the center to eliminate the overlap.

If you change the lane widths, the max triangle length can become invalid. Select the terrain model and increase the max triangle length.

If none of the above works then;

scream and holler, run in circles (but remind yourself that things are OK).

Drop the civil cell

delete the terrain model

Make a new terrain model using the now modified geometry.

This is the nature of the beast part. Sometimes after editing the radii and lanes or whatever, we just create a situation that the software just gets lost. By rebuilding the terrain we get a new chance to explicitly define where the boundary elements are. And it only take a couple minutes.
