I drew up an existing drainage network (pipes, manholes, etc.) for a road. I did this by creating a MODLRD file and manaully drawing up all the pipes and nodes for that area based off of survey.
Now I want to add inlets, manholes and pipes for my proposed design.
I was trying to figure out the best way to do this.
- Should I just keep expanding on that existing MODLRD file?
-Should I create a new MODLRD file for my proposed drainage and reference my existing drainage file? Can I just copy in my existing drainage?
One of the things that I need to do is try to modify existing inlet tops and change the tops to manholes while leaving the bottom structure the same.
If you will need to run hydraulic calculations, then all of the nodes and conduits will need to be in the same file. This may determine whether to continue working in your existing file or not. Also, you cannot place a conduit by picking a node that's in a reference, for the same reason.
You can use Home > Export Utilities > Export Drainage Submodel if you want to copy a selection set of elements to an external file. Then, you can use Import Drainage Submodel to import that data into another file.
To change the inlets to manholes, you will need a feature definition that's set up for a manhole, which uses the same 3D bottom cell as the inlet feature definition, but a top 3D cell that's suitable for a manhole. Look at the "Structure Type" property in the feature definition, as this determines what kind of node it is. You can then select the inlet and change its feature definition. This will change what the node looks like, and the software will know that it is now a manhole and not an inlet, but the elevations won't change.
There's more information on feature definitions here:

I did what you said by using Export Drainage Submodel. Creating a new file and using Import Drainage Submodel. However they appear to be moved as shown above. The yellow is the gold line is the imported model and the black structure is the reference of the model. The imported model is not in the correct location it is shifted slightly. This happened for over 30 structures. It does not seem to import in the same location. Any tips?
