Can I even open ORD files with GPK SS10?

I have been given some files and told to "make some sheets".

The files I have been given come from ORD V10.10 (I believe).
I have Geopak SS10.

I thought I might be able to use these files as references, despite the disparity in version. I'm not sure, though. I attached one of the design files as a reference and tried to adjust the level display (Global Freeze) of that reference. I then got a dialog telling me that "opening this file would downgrade the data". I don't want to do that, so I selected "no", but then Geopak just closed. I'm not trying to open the file - just attach it as background only.

Should I be able to attach an ORD file to a SS10 file as a reference?
If that's supposed to work, What else could be going on that tells the software I am trying to "open" the file?

I do have ORD 2020 R2, but I haven't done any setup for this particular DOT configuration because I was told we weren't pursuing work there. Apparently we ARE pursuing partnerships with their clients...but I don't think I can get the standards up and running before the deadline for tomorrow noon. (Heck, I can't even run the installer because I need IT to give permission to run any executables)

I do hate that contracts are often negotiated without consulting the technicians...It's never as easy as the folks in the offices think it is.

  • Hi Mary

You could try asking them to go back to ORD 10.10 and remove the civil model before sending the files to you (in File > Civil Tools > Downgrade dgn)

Hopefully that wouldn't impact the integrity of the data too much and you could still create your sheets.

  • I believe I can downgrade the files and remove the civil data myself. If not, I can ask them for the downgraded files (which I should then be able to remove civil data on my own). This is not a practical solution for collaboration moving forward, but it should get me what I need *for now*.

Is there a reason that I cannot seem to attach ORD files to a V8i file as a reference? Is the civil data that inflexible that it cannot even be viewed in that sort of read-only context?

Why is there no option to downgrade civil data to versions earlier than 2019?

  • MaryB,

ORD is unfortunately not backwards compatible. Most of the time it will corrupt the SS10 file if referenced in. Maybe you could try working in the file in Microstation Connect?

Another option is to use the Bentley generic workspace to create sheets. You don't have to use the updated tools to create sheets--it can still be done the "old fashioned" way. Also, I know that the downside of not having the workspace is how items are displayed, but is this something that the Project Manager can go ahead and tell the client the expectations are lower since the workspace is not available when the sheets are submitted?

  • That's terribly shortsighted of Bentley not to allow any V8i downgrade capability. There are plenty of Civil projects in the pipelines all over that could still be in progress for years to come. Some DOTs still haven't moved over to ORD, and I don't know too many companies planning to put in the time necessary to create their own standards. Large corporations, maybe, but the plenty of us are going to have to wait until the DOT figures it out for themselves. Even when that does happen, the project backlog will continue for a number of years - 60% complete plans do not often have enough budget left for a complete redesign for a "simple" software change.

I *do* have that client's DOT ORD workspace, so I was able to get it working well enough for the immediate task.
If I have to Drop/Explode/Remove all the civil data to be able to let my coworkers work on the project I will do that. I don't like that, but it's easier than giving everyone a crash course in ORD, especially when I'm still finalizing the configurations.
(My DOT is only in the Beta test stage for ORD, so we haven't had much need to teach everyone yet since we're not using it)

My Project Managers are not all that technically savvy. Talented engineers and managers, but not very knowledgeable on the technical aspects.
