"OpenRoads" _Can you still create a Surface from hand drawn elements in Cross Sections

Wanted to make sure this isn't hidden somewhere I am not finding. The old tools used to Be under Reports, Create DTM input or the Create DTM Proposed 3D.

  • Joseph, you can create a surface from hand drawn elements if they have 3D information included with the Terrain>Create From Elements tool.  I typically select all the features to be considered in the command and then activate the tool.  We have done this using drive profiles and utilizing the geometry offsets and tapers tool with the create 3D Automatically toggle on.  In the 3D view create smartline can be used with snaps to close the shape if needed.  To use the tool select the closed shape of the "hand drawn" features, and then add any additional interior breaklines desired.  You can also then add a surface template to that surface, or add linear templates to perimeter features of that surface.  Any surface shown in the 3D view that intersects the cross section will be displayed.

Feature type, edge method, and feature definition can also be set during the operation.

  • I've been wondering the same thing, for me this would be with ORD 21 R1, but if a newer ORD verison has the cabability that would work to.  This is the InRoads SS2 proccess I'd like to replicate:

Create a Surface DTM from Graphics Drawn in a Cross Section

I've been looking for a way to ceate fill slope benching terrains in ORD and this would be the ideal proccess for us.

  • What software were those tools in? It looks like Geopak, but I want to make sure.

I believe the answer is no, because we are no longer drawing cross sections with elements. There are no actual cross sections drawn at all anymore - they are saved section views taken from the 3D design model. The 3D design model can be used to create a terrain, and I believe that terrain can be exported to a surface (but I haven't looked into that aspect). But there are no cross section elements to use in creating a surface because the ARE no static cross section elements anymore.
