This error keeps showing up when i am trying to trim the elements in my model. What could be the possible reason ? Thanks in advance
It means that whatever element you are trying to manipulate is not in the active file. It is in a files that is referenced into your active file. If you want to do anything to that element, you will need to open the file it is drawn in.

Both the elements are in the same file , there is no external reference file.
It's possible that one element is in a different model (of the same file) which is referenced into the model you are currently working in. You can check this by opening the Reference file dialog to see what references you have.
