Dynamic Slope Labels

Hello,

I am trying to place a dynamic slope label by using two points. I have tried using a civil labeler and while this is dynamic, it is only one point. I have also tried to get the slope off the terrain model using the 'Annotate Between 2 Points' tool and while this uses two points, it is not dynamic. Any help or ideas on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • This is what I do:

    • Draw a line in 2d plan view where you want to measure and label between two points (using the Geometry Line Between Points tool).
    • Open the profile of the line and draw a single vertical profile line by snapping to the active terrain on the far left end and the far right end. Set this line as the active profile.
    • Check that the profile line stays connected to the ends of the active terrain if you move or change the length of the line in plan view.
    • Create a Text Favorite by selecting the line in 2d plan view and selecting the profile slope in its properties. It should place a text favorite that says "Profile Line Between Points Rule.Slope". Or you can scroll through all the stuff and find the same.
    • Create a Civil Labeler that uses this text favorite. Apply it to your line in 2d plan view. It should be dynamic! Move the line around in plan view to verify that the text updates.

You can put the line on a no-plot layer and the text label on a plottable layer. You can also associate this text favorite with an annotation group and a feature definition so that you can easily label a 2-point slope by using your special 2-point slope feature definition (and setting the active profile). I can't say I've tried but I also bet that you can make a super simple Civil Cell that consists of a single line with a single profile line.

The photos below show an example in 2d plan view. All I did was grab an end of the line and move it. I'd have to play with the Civil Labeler settings to get the text rotation the way I want it, but the point is that it's dynamic.

  • Hello Steven,

I'm trying to replicate your workflow, when trying to create a next text favourite and selecting the line in the default 2D plan view. The Fields Editor does not give the option of selecting the profile slope (see image below). Any idea what might cause this issue?

  • Silly question, but did you activate the single line profile? The "Profile Line Between Points Rule / Slope" only appears in my properties when I set my profile line active.

    I'm using 10.10.21.04.

  • Control panel shows 10.10.21.4 (student version), the profile is set to active.

The weird thing is that when I look into the properties (when NOT creating a text favourite), the "Profile Line Between Points Rule / Slope" does show up! (see image)

  • No idea what's happening there, but another thing to try:

I have a feature definition & annotation group that I use routinely for this exact purpose (labeling the slope of a line in plan view that has a simple two-point profile). When annotated it looks like this:

The slope text favorite is Linear 3d Annotation.Point Slope
