If there is a catalog, when a different item is selected, some sort of assignment of the difference between one vs the other is important for clarity. We are not paperless yet. The drainage guys want the pipes to pop. Edge lines will not get it.

The same really goes for inlets. A 5' curb opening vs a 20' curb opening should display differently in 2D and 3D. We have all this intelligence, the model should reflect it graphically as well as non-graphically via attributes/properties.

RE: Drainage: confirming that 2D Pipes' exterior wall lines aren't a thing yet?

Chuck:

Just thinking out loud here: maybe an idea worth considering (or not, just spit-balling): use separate "small" and "large" Feature Definitions for 3D display of nodes and conduits so that they are put on different levels. You can then later reference the "large" pipes and structures to your 2D plan view, but not display the "small" 3D stuff. Not sure I like this idea myself - it would require configuration changes that most users would not have access to - but just a thought.

Mark, I'm not sure if this addresses the issue with arch pipe. I'd have to test it.

RE: Drainage: confirming that 2D Pipes' exterior wall lines aren't a thing yet?

Yep, Robert, Karl, and you have been very helpful, but none of my SELECT money sees its way to you, does it? Y'all shouldn't be forced to carry the forum. I've always told Jonathan that he has the hardest job at Bentley, merging two disparate verticals. I think he's done a great job and trust him to continue to do so. The software is getting very good, but the Extraordinary Complexity demands a high level of support. Support Effectiveness is directly related to commitment. Jonathan can beg for resources, but without us yelling, the resource managers assume we're satisfied. You all know the importance getting timely support is to the successful use of this product.

RE: Drainage: confirming that 2D Pipes' exterior wall lines aren't a thing yet?

to repurpose the Sagan Standard: "Extraordinary Complexity Requires Extraordinary Support". ORD D&U is the most complex software I've seen in 30+ years by far. The support should actually be correspondingly better than the roadway scope, but it is considerably worse. This is, of course, expected due to the disparity in userbase numbers, but squeaky wheels...

RE: Drainage: confirming that 2D Pipes' exterior wall lines aren't a thing yet?

Oh, I certainly agree, Jeff.
A new forum devoted to ORD Drainage and Utilities issues will

allow us to extract some actual help from our searches,

allow Bentley Staff (and users) to more easily monitor and reply to D&U questions

provide some visibility into the response times to questions

(providing a mechanism to leverage Bentley into better response time (and value))

While there is a bit of work involved in populating the relevant current D&U content over to a D&U-focused Forum, doing so will provide immediate value to D&U users. Outside of that, it's not a particularly heavy lift for Bentley to do this and increase their D&U support experience rather dramatically.
