Visualisation Specialist Trying to Understand Exporting Issues.

I recently jumped to a new role doing infrastructure visualisation and was given a large highway project in ORD and OBM to export and eventually run through a renderer.

After getting through the huge host of issues exporting from OpenRoad entails (Did you know if your geometry is to far away from 0,0,0 it breaks the exported geometry). I've finally hit the barrier of exporting clean geometry from an OBM file that not even the old hands can figure out.

So after my life story my questions are:

- Why are barriers and rails treated differently to the rest of the geometry when exporting? No matter what I do or how I export any roads or bridges with barriers or rails disappear on export.

- Why Can ORM export IFC but OBM cannot?

- Why does breaking up the barriers with "Drop Line Style" mean "some" of the barriers and railing elements are exported successfully.

Notes:

- I've been trying to export out using OBJ, FBX, DXF, DWG and IFC all with the same results.

- Opening Up the DGN in another , non-bently program also creates the same issue.

- I'm a very new user of ORM and OBM as I only started 2 moths ago.

I'm utterly lost at this point, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi Ollie,

    - Why are barriers and rails treated differently to the rest of the geometry when exporting? No matter what I do or how I export any roads or bridges with barriers or rails disappear on export.

I bet you are using 3d linestyles for your barriers and rails? This is DGN technology that does not export into any other environments unless it is dropped into the base geometry. Note that the success of dropping is subject to how the 3d linestyle was initially defined - best results is usually to create the barrier 3d linestyle as a Mesh initially. This is probably the answer to your third question.

Why Can ORM export IFC but OBM cannot

The ORD IFC exporter is built for Mesh objects (as ORD models objects as Meshes). OBM creates Solid entities and therefore the ORD exporter does not work for OBM data. You can use the iTwin platform to export these objects to IFC.

  • Hi Ollie,

Can you tell us the name of the program you are using for the rendering part?

    Regards,

    Louis

  • Hi Louis,

I will be using Houdini by SideFx to create the scene. Mainly because of its node based procedural workflows and how good it is with dealing with large and dense geometry. The actual Rendering will either be done by Mantra (Houdini internal renderer) or V-Ray.
