Moving into a Citrix environment

We are merging with another firm, and will (eventually) be moving our design work into their citrix-based cloud environment.  20 years ago, MicroStation and InRoads didn't play nicely with Citrix, but that was a LONG time ago.  Is anyone currently working in that environment, and do you have suggestions for us as we plan the transition?

Thanks in advance.

  • I believe there have been several threads on the regular MicroStation board about cloud-based environments. What software versions do you plan on using?

    Power GeoPak 08.11.09.918
    Power InRoads 08.11.09.918
    OpenRoads Designer 2021 R2

  • Thanks - I didn't see threads on the MicroStation board, but I was looking specifically for Citrix, not cloud-based.  I'll go back and take another look.

We're just in the process of moving from Power InRoads 08.11.07.615 to the current version of OpenRoads.  I also run WaterCAD occasionally.

  • We are working on a similar transition and our testing of ORD, ProjectWise, Civil3D, etc. all are working great in the Citrix environment.  Using a master image for the users with the correct versions of your software is a huge time saver (verses updating 100s of individual computers).

A couple of items to consider.

-Do a lot of software and user testing, and use a diverse group of users.

-Be aware that the host server hardware may be slower than a dedicated workstation.  Most server blades CPUs will top out at ~2.4ghz, while a dedicated workstation CPU can run at ~4.0ghz.  It does make a difference.

-Some software vendors will not support a program running on a VDI, or possibly band its use in the EULA.
