100% Mark! So many who are more familiar with working in 3D or assume "3D Model" indicates 3D only miss this particular workflow requirement of ORD. It seems like Bentley should have a clear path or hard limitation (warning dialog) to what's attempted in a 3D file when it comes to these ORD tools and workflows.

With that said, I noticed Grot is working in an area of an abutment by the file name.

@Grot, I know this is a leap and would take the workflow out of the ORD toolset, however It may be worth looking into the Drawing (workflow dropdown) Constraints tab to develop 3D by "2D" constraints to draw in 3D. I know some minds work differently and that workflow may work better within your client needs. BentleyLearn instructions I've found are under one of the OBM pdf documents, despite those tools not being exclusive to OBM/OBD. https://learn.bentley.com/app/Public/ViewLearningPathWithMasterCourseExpanded?lpId=112428&mcId=103481 ( Actually, those constraint tools fall under Microstation within BentleyLearn... the OBM training document may be more applicable)

Ok do this: create a new 2D files, once opened just hit the "set active terrain" then right click on your view and choose view - 2 views 2D and 3D

Now in your 3D windows/model draw or import your lines and try everything that was mentionned above

maybe also start a proper training on openroads

But by using the "Plan by 3D Element" tool that creates a Horiz. Alignment and Profile from a 3D element, and the only way it works is in a 3D model because it requires a 3D element to work?

Sorry if I sound argumentative, I'm just trying to understand where my thought process is flawed.

Will, you need to start with a 2D Seed when you are creating Geometry and let ORD create the 3D "Managed Model" as needed.

So you are saying if I just create a 2D model in the original 3D model only dgn this workflow will work; even if there is nothing in the 2D model?

Thanks for spending some time looking at this,

You are correct, I was trying to use the "Linear Template" in strictly a 3D dgn (no 2D models included). I was thinking that the following workflow would work to create a ‘pit’ within a terrain, but it doesn’t:

In a 3D model (the only model in the dgn) I create a ‘box’ at a specific elevation, below the terrain.
Use the “Plan by 3D Element” tool to create an Alignment and Profile from the just created ‘box’. (however this tool doesn’t appear to create a 2D model even though the alignment and profile are created… hmm?). The Alignment created (or at least displayed at 0 elevation, and a profile does show up in a view)

3. Apply the “Linear Template” tool to the ‘box’ (it won’t let me select the alignment or element created from it).

4. By creating a “Linear Template” I was hoping to apply a corridor template to it that would then run the perimeter of the ‘box’ up to daylight, in order to simulate excavation. I thought that this workflow would do nicely because the only variation I have to do from project to project is draw out the bottom foot print of the excavation.

But this workflow is not working out according to plan. Does anyone know where my logic is failing? If a 2D model is necessary for ORD to define an alignment and profile why doesn’t the “Plan by 3D Element” create the 2D model automatically. Or am I miss understanding how these tools work?

in my image, my line in the left have an active profile, this line will generate a 3D vertex in 3D every 2.5m

Linear templates are meant to be used in a 2D-3D file, are you doing it this way? or you are trying to used them on 3D lines that are only in 3D and not in 2D?

when you have a 2D line with an active profile ths line will also be generated in 3D the number of 3D vertex this line has will be based on your stroking definition found on your 2D element properties. This parameter will define the number of linear template drop.

Linear template drop are based on 3D stroking definition (number of 3D vertex) and chord definition for arcs. So to change the template drop you change the stroking definition of your element, you found thins on your 2D element
