It all comes down to the deliverables - if you are purely providing construction models and only require 3d strings, MX is much faster without a doubt. If your market requires 3d BIM/Digital Engineering deliverables and/or your other disciplines work in 3d and you have 3d coordination and clash detection workflows then the move to ORD is inevitable.

Things naturally take longer because of all the additional detail the design incorporates, eg.

The real question is, is this the direction your market is going and will you need to make the move eventually? The one thing we can say moving in this direction is there are tangible savings during construction because of the visibility of issues that were traditionally missed during the design phase because of this new visualised and detailed way of working, however, this is something hard to communicate in the early days.

RE: I hate this software so bad

It's not only the time Mark, the other items are

The confidence levels of the designer in terms of the accuracy of final outputs from the 3D model.

Model transition and traceability from concept to IFC.

In a situation when designers change in the middle of the project it is near impossible to get the transfer of knowledge and documentation. You only get what you see on the screen. There are so many variables that you cannot track back. In this situation, the cost escalates enormously. Despite having documentation and well-written procedures. The accountability of the designers is completely gone as they cannot own and understand others' work. At times it is easy to restart.

3D graphics are good to look at and integrate all disciplines it is near impossible to check all design elements such as instantaneous cross falls, curve widening, rotation of superelevation etc.,

I guess someone is laughing and thinking at this and saying, MX guys have a winge, but I still cannot see design software that can do the job as it was.

Our companies and our clients need to know how long design/modelling is taking.

At the moment I think there is a lot of disbelief that it is as slow as it is and that it must just a "training" or "up skilling" issue.

I don't think any company/client has sat down and done a proper cost analysis of Open Roads Designer vs our legacy software.

I come from using MX where we used it in a fully parametric way, via design scripts (input files), that we chose when to run.

We are finding to just get a comparable model to what we used to get is around 2.5 to 3 times as long, depending upon what software you used to use, and how you used it. .

RE: I hate this software so bad

Civil 3d is way better at site design, creating cogo points, and visualizing cogo points, it's not even close. Like with ORD it has to be set up correctly.

The Tag text has an element Template including a "TitleBlk-RW" cell. This cell may include some settings affecting text rotation? Is there a reason it needs to use this Element Template. Try using one without the cell and see if that helps.

I had a look at this and the text that you are seeing rotating are Tag elements. I haven't used these for a very long time so not too sure what could be causing the rotation (it doesnt happen for me). Needless to say, this is something down to basic Microstation CAD functionality (it doesnt have anything to do with ORD plan production or the Civil side of things),

One of the worst parts to me too is, by the time you get to plan production, your files have so many references, models, dependencies, etc. that increase processing time. In plan production I constantly need to switch between many sheet drawings to make edits. InRoads it was instant, now it can take up to 30 seconds to open a drawing. That adds up. And even within the drawings, just not nearly as snappy as InRoads. So frustrating.

RE: I hate this software so bad

Remember that the rest of the world have already started moving that way.
