We do work for a DOT and they still have a number of projects they want us to finish in SS10. It's a contractual thing. We have some users that will open these files in ORD and there is a dialog that asks if you want to brand your file with a workspace/workset, but is does not give you the option to open it in Read Only mode. So we have to make requests to the DOT to restore old versions of the file and it is upgraded to ORD and the SS10 file is still the one needed for work. I have searched high and low for a variable. We have tried the variable CIVIL_UPGRADE_PROMPT_OFF =1 but that only works for versions of ORD. Is there some variable to force ORD to open SS10 files as Read Only? Thanks
Steve,
If you have an SS10 dgn that has or has previously contained civil data within it, and then you go to open it in ORD you will receive the message below.
If you have an SS10 dgn that only has MicroStation lines or "dumb" graphics and none of the civil commands have ever been used, and then you go to open it in ORD it will NOT give you this message. It has not been branded with a civil model yet, so it CAN be opened in MicroStation, ORD, etc. It has no civil data, so nothing can trigger that message. You see, the message says, "Obsolete Civil Data Found". You should be able to open that dgn in SS10 again if you have not run any of the ORD civil commands within the dgn.
Maybe what you can do is for the SS10 dgns you want to be opened Read-Only only in ORD, open them in SS10 and place a horizontal alignment and then delete it. That will create a civil model in the dgn and trigger the "Obsolete Civil Data Found" message.

Thanks for the quick response. The hardest thing is this is thousands of file we would have to open and place and delete a horizontal alignment. I am just surprised that even on the MicroStation side, there isn't some warning that the file will be updated to the CONNECT Schema. I guess we will stick with backup requests. We have been told there are about 3 years of V8i projects still to complete. Thanks Holly
