I am trying to replace an existing horizontal alignment with a new horizontal alignment that is an offset of a third element. The original horizontal alignment already has vertical geometry and a corridor associated with it. I have already tried

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

Hi Marc,

What the tool looks to do is transfer the Horizontal Geometry Feature Name, Feature Definition and Civil instance links from one element to another (so it is identified to all related objects as the same thing in the active model and all references), but also transfers the entire Profile space as is from one element to another. No relinking or anything like that required - hence why it is such as great tool to quickly completely redefine geometry and keep all dependent relationships alive.

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

I figured the geometry would need to be in the same file. But, I wonder what would happen if profile named boundaries were in a different file? Or a corridor? Will it carry over the NB like it does if they are in the same file as the geometry?

The only time this usually doesnt work is if the existing and proposed replacement Geometry have relationships to each other. The easy solution is to use the "GEOMETRY SIMPLIFY" command on the old geometry and it should work fine.

Note that the tool can sometimes have issues if the start and end points of the old geometry matches the new, but we have had a lot of success with it (still wondering why it is not exposed to users with an icon as is a lifesaver a lot of the time).

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

Mark,

That key in does seem to work. It will replace a horizontal element and even carry over profile named boundaries. I am curious, have you tested this through reference file? I only tested it in one file. Anything you have found where it does not work?

Thanks for the tip.

You might need to manually edit the file to move the one vertical from the originating LandXML file to the target LandXML file.

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

Hi Marc,

We can do this in ORD using the "GEOMETRY SUBSTITUTE" command, but unfortunately this doesn't exist in v8i.

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

Thank you for the quick response, Marc! It is greatly appreciated!

How do I copy vertical geometry between the 2 horizontals? That would be a huge help on its own.

RE: Replace a horizontal alignment

There is no way to replace one horizontal with another. There should be....but there isn't.

You can copy verticals between 2 different horizontals and you can use simplify element to remove offset rules and make the offset element a stand alone ruled civil element.

You can use corridor reattach to reattach a corridor from one alignment to another.
