[ORD] Can named boundaries be placed before the alignment starts?

I have circumstances where I may want my plan/profile named borders to be placed "back" of the actual alignment so that there is space between the edge of my border and the bginning of the alignment.

In a case like this, we would traditionally shift the border over a ways to be able to show some of the area before the alignment. If the profile starts at 10+00, we may start the profile grid at "9+00", even though that isn't an actual station. This gives us room for notes, incidental construction, and a better view of the area we are tying into. In this case, it would allow us to actually show all the annotation for the alignment without it running off the sheet. The Named Boundary tool didn't let me enter a station that isn't actually on the alignment. I can understand the logic of that, but Detailing is an art as much as a science.

What is the procedure to leave space at the beginning of the named boundaries? Is this just a setting I am missing?
Note: All of my setting have been provided by my client. While I am not forbidden from creating our own to accommodate our needs, I'd prefer to work with what is provided as much as possible. Thank you.

  • Mary,

Another option you might be able to take advantage of is the "Overlap" functionality in the Plan Named Boundary dialog. The intended use of that setting is to overlap each sheet, but what you can do is set the Overlap to "100" in this case and ONLY place the first boundary. Then come back into the dialog, set the Overlap back to "0" and be sure to set the "Group" to the Named Boundary Group you just created so that you can lay out the rest of the NBs, without overlap, while also putting them in the same group as the first NB. (Of course, you'd need to identify the correct location of the start of the next NBs by snapping to the end of the 1st NB and the alignment).

I hope that gives you another potential workaround for this situation moving forward.
