Create Alternate Surface - InRoads v08.09.03.06

I was testing the Create Alternate Surface toggle switch in my templates. I am attempting to create a Subbase surface for my client. In the world of machine control, the contractors are requesting this info. In v8.5 this was not a problem.

I applied this application to the bottom points and slope intercept points in my template and gave the points the correct DTM name. I am aware of the vertical faces so I made the proper adjustments in my subbase in the areas of box re-construction and boxing out the subbase to the toe of slope.

I am getting strange results with respect to the alternate surface, spikes are very common along with missed points in my template. I verified that the points do have the alternate surface clicked-on and the proper surface name. (As I was editing the templates I was copying and pasting the surface name to each point to advoid typo's).

My contraints look fine. Is the any tips or tricks to be made area of?

Thanks,

Joe

  • Thanks Chris and Thomas,

I checked my TC's and found the problems. I never realized that even though the components look fine the TC's need to line up as well like in V8.5.

  • Joe,

You'll have to post your project data to debug.  There are a number of causes.

Do you have a lot of different templates? Do you have multiple end conditions?  Do you have some display rules turning components on and off?  Are you "tweening" cross sections that weren't created in the Designer?

These will all potentially cause inconsistencies with alt. surfaces.  I've found that alt. surfaces work well with a consistent template, but if you have varying conditions with features that are not uniformly connected through the entire limits, than it becomes difficult.

For example, I have a display rule that turns on a granular component for certain conditions, which creates a bunch of isolated sections of the alt. surface that triangulates down the whole corridor.  The triangles then must be cleaned up after.

  • Thomas,

There is possibilty of the feature names may not be the same. There is about 10 different templates being used. I will verify and let you know.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  • Joe,

Have you displayed the features for the subgrade surface? Could there be a surface feature discrepancy where the feature is included in one template and not in another. This is common when points are introduced between cut and fill slope solutions.

If you need me to debug this issue, send me a note and the data.
