This solves the problem of my list not auto-sorting if I turn references on and off, but if I ever want to manually sort by display and then turn references off, it still auto-sorts. How do I turn that off?

As I can see you can sort by the column you want and your choice is preserved. Click the header of the column to sort and a small arrow is showing the one currently used:

I feel your pain...I prefer my references to be sorted by display and V8i would not resort immediately when turning references on and off like ORDisaster does. Extremely frustrating.

It seems you have your reference manager set to sort by Display. I would change this to sort by something else like File Name by clicking on that label in the reference manager.
