Try an End Condition Exception. That should allow you to modify the EC without impacting the drops. Once supplemental surface is added, the Exception can be cleanly removed. The other possibility is to place two components to your EC area with a display rule that toggles between the two when ground is not found and uses a non-EC version instead.

You might have to fudge your model if the extent of your terrain model is insufficient.

A fairly simple way would be to drop a copy of your template just for the region where you have the gap and edit the template so that your End Condition (EC) point does not check for interception. Then make sure to specify reasonable dimensions in your constraints and leave the "EC is infinite" unticked.
