This is all great feedback. I need to break your message down a bit and think about if I am doing what you are suggesting. The one feature I wish I could get a result out of within the Terrain Filter world would be the elevation rules. I know the elevation extents of my FG and to be able to get the zero elevation spikes to knock it off with that rule seems ideal. However, have had no luck with it in my testing.

RE: Terrain Modeling- Dealing with Edge of Boundary Spikes and other erroneous Terrain Features

Actually the best approach to "Edit" and create graphical filters is to only have the Civil Features checked and no other attributes selected when building those filter groups. For some reason, the process gets confused by too many search parameters. I know that method tends to work regardless what point names are applied to Corridor templates. If it's set to any one of those Top features, it will find them. It also seems to utilize the boundary type better than just setting the graphic to the typical terrain "boundary" type. It is my assumption the Boundary Option tool shown in the video uses the same method used by the Filter boundary type version. However, I think the Boundary Option tool gives more control in the local terrain file that may be reading across referenced Features.

RE: Terrain Modeling- Dealing with Edge of Boundary Spikes and other erroneous Terrain Features

Thanks for the video Shawn. I had not seen that one previously. Do you have any experience with creating your own Graphical Filters and Utilizing them for creating Boundary Edge Methods? I really appreciate the feedback.

When I Unlock the rule, using the Microstation tool to delete the vertex(s) within the Polyline Terrain Boundary that are snapping to zero, I loose all of that work when I re-enable the rules to update the terrain from Filter, or whatever the source is. Any thoughts on how to create a Terrain Boundary that I can use to constrain my terrain that does not have spikes to zero in the first place?

When I try to extract the Boundary from Graphics, modify that polyline to the boundary I want/need and re- apply it as a Terrain Boundary feature, I have been unsuccessful in getting that Boundary to rule my terrain as it should?

RE: Terrain Modeling- Dealing with Edge of Boundary Spikes and other erroneous Terrain Features

Hi Matt,

Looks like your terrain boundary has some vertices with an elevation of zero.
It might be worth trying to actually remove these vertices from your terrain.
You can do this using the edit model tool:

It's helpful to have the triangles displayed.

If you get a message saying "not an editable terrain" there is likely a civil rule preventing you from making edits (such as a rule to the data source, graphical filter rule etc)

You can remove the civil rule from your terrain with this button:
