Computer open roads

What would be the most influential part of the computer for a good performance of Openroads.
Any tips for a good computer for Openroads performance.
thanks

  • System requirements suggesting only the minimum. What is your current system for medium to big sized projects?

In my case I am opening several reference files simultaniously and 64GB of ram helps very much. I prefer to create seperate files for terrain, geometry, corridors and sheets. Also high CPU clock also helps as Openroads does not use multiprocessing in most situations. Also a M2 ssd with high speeds is very helpful. I dont see much difference of different GPUs upto now. Thats my experience of ORD.

  • thanks, medium projects with many references, but sometimes quite large DTMs.

  • I think it's a bit of a difficult question to answer if you're trying to find the 'optimal' setup because different components of the software seem to have been designed differently and as such rely on different hardware components more than others. So hardware that is amazing for general navigation in the 3D space might not show any improvement in another tool.

Without going into too much detail:

    • A fast SSD is essential. Normal HDDs just do not cut it anymore.
    • A high clock CPU. Many ORD processes only run on a single core, but I have found that more processes (especially on the corridor modelling side) are being upgraded to run on multiple threads lately but progress is too slow to get enough benefit from more cores. I really wish Bentley would sort this one out...
    • 32+GB RAM - especially for drawing production. For example I've found that the bottleneck for running cross-section drawings is total RAM capacity. Maybe faster RAM could help?
    • Any mid-level gaming graphics card like an nVidia GTX 1060 or better. If you plan on exporting to LumenRT, one of the tech talks presenters stated that more graphics memory is better. 6GB does well for me but I noticed really bad LumenRT performance with 2GB even though it was on a more powerful GPU.
