The create cut fill volume tool can be very useful but I was wondering if there is any way/workaround to use it between design models. To my mind there is no way without changing the feature definitions of the elements for one of the models to the existing volume option (or another one other than design) which would be messy.
I want to ideally avoid having to go through the process of starting to create formation terrains for everything if possible.
Unfortunately ORD doesn't really use the concept of separate design models as unique model containers which was one of the greatest strengths of MX. In ORD everything just gets chucked into a bucket and is only filterable using Feature Definitions. You may be stuck with Terrains for this if no one else has any ideas.

Thanks Mark and that's what I was thinking but had a glimmer of hope that someone much more experienced than myself might have thought of a workaround workflow. In fairness I would expect you'd have to do it with formation terrains in something like Civil 3D anyway.
Yes difficult to beat MX in some areas.
Idea added here:
Introduce the concept of seperate model containers to control data much better

Thoroughly agreed and voted for!
Does not help with getting away from terrains and using models, but look into the Delta Terrain function to generate a "difference" terrain. Turning on the top mesh is a quick way to get a terrain from mesh anyway.
